Relaxation Spa Massage
What is the difference between a Relaxation Spa Massage and a Therapeutic Massage?
A relaxation spa massage is typically a full body massage using soothing Swedish massage and Lomi Lomi massage strokes to relax tense muscles and release stress. A therapeutic massage is catered to your specific body pains and injuries with a focus on reducing pain, increasing range of motion, and improving the quality of life. A relaxation massage is also very beneficial for suffers of anxiety and depression.
Benefits of Relaxation Spa Massage
– Relax tense muscles
– Release stress and tension
– Increases circulation to muscles
– Increases flexibility and range of motion
– Reducing tissue inflammation
– Helps to manage overactive parasympathetic fight or flight response which can cause anxiety, depression, insomnia, migraine headaches, and digestive problems
– Provides quiet “me” time to focus on yourself and your well being with no interruptions.
– While getting massaged you can meditate, take a nap, or have a conversation with your massage therapist.
A Relaxation Spa Massage Provides Immediate Benefits of Reducing Stress and Tension!
Every day life is very stressful with stress getting stored in the body along with physical tension from daily actions. Because of the daily abuse the body receives, everyone can benefit from receiving a massage on a regular basis. Daily tasks of driving, looking at smartphones and computers, as well as sitting for long periods of time commonly cause stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and back. A relaxing spa massage once a month helps release stress and tension build up.
Benefits Relaxation Spa Massage Has On Autonomic Nervous System
The Autonomic Nervous System is the involuntary response system of the body and part of that system is the Parasympathetic Nervous System which controls the body’s responses relating to Rest and Digest/Fight and Flight. Life events can cause the parasympathetic response in the body to become overactive and stuck in the fight or flight mode. This causes the body to be tense and the person can become very emotional exhibiting anger, depression, and mood swings as well as aggressive behavior. Receiving a relaxation spa massage soothes the parasympathetic nervous system allowing it to return to the rest and digest mode where muscles are more relaxed and the person has a feeling of calmness.
How Often Do You Need A Relaxation Massage
A massage can be very beneficial to the body even if you have no serious pain issues. A massage once a month will help release stress and tension from daily life.
If you have a stressful work or home life a relaxation massage once week or once every other week would be recommended.
If you suffer from CAD (chronic anxiety disorder) or depression clinical studies show a 50 minute massage twice a week for 12 weeks significantly improved conditions (with total recovery from CAD in many participants) who also had lasting effects for weeks to months after stopping twice weekly massages!
Risks of Massage
If it is your first time getting a massage or if you haven’t had a massage in a while, soreness and bruising may occur after a massage until your muscles get used to being manipulated.
Massage may not be appropriate for those with:
- Healing wounds
- Bleeding disorders or taking blood-thinning medication
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Severe thrombocytopenia
- Severe osteoporosis
- Unexplained pain
- Pregnancy with complications
- Some types of cancer
If you have any of the above please consult your medical doctor to discuss if massage therapy is an appropriate treatment plan for you.
What to Expect During a Relaxing Massage Therapy Session
When you first arrive we will have a consult session to discuss your expectations for that session. After the first treatment, on each follow up session, we will discuss any changes in your lifestyle and adjust the massage schedule as necessary. Once we are ready to begin the treatment session you will undress to your comfort level and lay on a massage table where you are covered with a sheet. The genital and chest areas remain covered at all times and are NOT massaged. I have a heated massage table and am happy to adjust the heat to your desired comfort. A hypoallergenic massage lotion is used during the massage to reduce friction. Please let me know if you suffer from any allergies to ingredients that may be in the lotion. A relaxation massage typically last 1 hour to 90-Minutes. If the pressure used during the session feels too uncomfortable please say something! A relaxation massage should not be painful! After the session take your time getting up off the table to get dressed. Some people may feel “Massage Drunk” which is where you feel deeply relaxed, even light headed. Once dressed if you would like to extend the benefits of your massage I can recommend specific stretches for you to do at home. Drink plenty of water over the next 24 hours to help flush any toxins and keep hydrated.
