Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy

Cupping has been used as a healing tool for over three thousand years in the East and was brought to the spotlight in the West when 2016 US Olympic Athletes were seen with red circles on their bodies. Celebrities and Athletes have now been seen commonly in public with red circles on their bodies using cupping to help their body recover from training and injuries quicker.

The dark purple marks show where the blood flow to the muscles is poor.

How and Why Cupping Helps

Blood not only supplies muscles with oxygen and removes waste it also provides muscles with nutrients to repair and thrive. If blood flow is restricted due to injury or stressed muscles this will inhibit the body’s natural ability to repair its self. This can cause injuries to only partially heal and causes chronic pain. Cupping can restart the natural healing process, regardless how long ago the injury happened! Cupping uses negative pressure to pull stagnant blood up to 4 inches deep into muscle tissue and forces fresh nutrient and oxygen filled blood into the muscle to restart the healing process. Cupping also decompresses the skin which can release entrapped subcutaneous nerves reducing pain. The pressure applied by the cupping can leave red marks that look like a hickey. The marks are not painful and can last up to 2 weeks.

Two Types of Cupping Therapy Treatments

There are two types of cupping treatments that may be used, soft silicon cups and hard plastic cups, each are used for different effects on the body. The soft cups create less pressure than the hard cups and tend to not leave marks. A soft cup massage can be applied to decompresses the skin allowing for better tissue slide and glide for improved movement. Rapid application and removal of cups also provides neuro sensory stimulation which allows therapy for pain using the skin. Soft cups typically do not cause much discomfort.

The hard cups are made of plastic which can form a tight seal against the skin and create deep pressure. The hard cups can pull stagnant blood from muscles up to 4 inches deep! A treatment with hard cups is equivalent to deep tissue massage only faster and more effective. It can take up to 2 weeks for the body to digest the old blood that was move out of the muscle into the skin and the purple circles disappear. For areas with good blood flow the circles will be light red in color and return to normal skin tone within a few minutes to within a few hours. The harder cups can cause a slight pinchy feeling where applied which tends to lessen as the session progresses.

What to Expect During a Cupping Session

When you first arrive we will have a consult session and assessment. Once we are ready to begin the treatment session you may need undress to your comfort level depending on the areas we will be working on and the clothing you are wearing. Bare skin is needed for cupping therapy. You may be asked to sit or and lay on a massage table depending on what area of the body being treated. A hypoallergenic massage lotion may be used with Cupping to reduce friction. Please let me know if you suffer from any allergies to ingredients that may be in the lotion. At the end of the cupping session we will discuss your treatment plan. Drink plenty of water over the next 24 hours to help flush any toxins and keep hydrated.

Cupping may not be appropriate for:

  • Burns
  • Healing wounds
  • Bleeding disorders or taking blood-thinning medication
  • Fractures
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Severe thrombocytopenia
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Unexplained pain
  • Pregnancy with complications

If you have any of the above please consult your medical doctor to discuss if cupping therapy is an appropriate treatment plan for you.
